diversionary tactics

The kids try any conversational topic they can to steer me away from math. Mostly it doesn't work:

Q: What kind of music do you like?
A: We need to stay focused on math.

Q: Do you like Old Country Buffet?
A: We need to stay focused on math.

Q: Does you have a boyfriend?
A: We need to stay focused on math.

Q: So how's your brother doing?
A: Much better, thanks, but we need to stay focused on math.

Q: Who's a better basketball player, Sue Bird or Lisa Leslie?
A: Oooh, well, they really play different roles on their teams so I'm not sure that's a fair question but Lisa's got more experience, but I think she's past her prime and Sue's really ... wait! You tricked me! We need to stay focused on math! Hey, is that Betty Lennox's autograph on your shirt? Cool! No, math!

I must admit that I was particularly charmed to hear the boys arguing that question, but that's no excuse for me to fall prey to their evil plan.

Dammit!

You're a good feminist and a better math teacher.
